Such a different mix of media! Types of "mixed media" in scrapbooking. Mix media master class Panels in the technique of mix media

To be honest, before I didn’t think about the origin and essence of Mixed Media, because we all know that Mixed Media is obtained when we combine 3 or more different performance techniques in one work (spraying, stamping, embossing, etc., etc.). . P.). But why, for example, work in the style of Steampunk, where we applied the technique of spraying, masking through a stencil and simulating rust, we call Steampunk, and not Mixed Media? After all, the conditions of the three techniques are clearly observed ... I decided for myself that I must definitely understand this issue and find out FOR SURE what, why and why!

I want to make a small comment right away for those who simply KNOW and do not accept other versions of their knowledge about Mixed Media. I also want to warn you in advance that I am not writing this article to incite disputes and civil wars. No. I just want to understand and understand for myself - and my conclusions, perhaps, will help someone who is also interested in forming their correct opinion about Mixed Media.

In fact, when I started my “investigation”, everything turned out to be banal: it was enough to remember that the mysterious combination of Mixed Media is translated into Russian as “mixed TECHNIQUE”.

But my inquisitive mind did not stop there. Why, then, in numerous dictionaries of scrapbooking, Mixed Media is cited as one of the STYLES of paper art? Why are such a huge number of people inspired to talk about what they do in the Mixed Media STYLE? And anyway, who came up with this phrase - Mixed Media? Where did it come from? What is the origin story?

I propose to sort everything out in order;).

The first thing I did was go to the omniscient Wikipedia resource, where there were two definitions of Mixed Media:

Both in the first and in the second case, the definitions practically coincide and speak of what we already know. But in option 1, Mixed Media refers to the mixing of more than one technique, and in option 2, nothing is said about the quantity at all. I will say more: I researched a lot of resources, but I did not find any exact numbers and references to the three techniques. Although in Russian "mixture" is considered to be a mixture of two or more ingredients ...

As a result, I concluded that the number 3 was invented by someone “of ours” :), for ease of perception. In this connection, I propose to leave this question as it is and not to bother too much, then you will understand why.

Further, based on the above definitions, as well as numerous other sources, we can safely conclude that Mixed Media is not just one of the scrapbooking abbreviations, but a more global name for mixing techniques in fine and decorative arts. Yes Yes! Mixed Media was not invented by scrapbookers or even card makers, and therefore the origins should be sought in it - in ART.

And now let's understand the terminology, put everything on the shelves and remember what style is, and what is technique (performance technique) ...

Technics in the dictionary of V.I. Dalia - methods of work and their application to the case.

Technics in dictionary S.I. Ozhegov - a set of techniques used in some business, skill.

* Speaking about the technique of performance in creativity, we mean a certain technical technique or techniques that the artist uses. A reception is an action with a clear algorithm. For example, in our case, embossing is a technique where there is powder, a hairdryer, a stamp and a special ink pad. It is also worth noting that representatives of various areas of art can use the same technique.

Style in dictionary S.I. Ozhegov - a set of features, the proximity of expressive artistic techniques and means, which determine the unity of some direction in creativity.

* Here we are talking about the visual unity of perception, and not about the technique. Each style consists of a set of visually perceived features. For example, for S habby C style hic in scrapbooking- this is a light pastel range, aging / worn materials or an imitation of an old / vintage decor. By the way, S habby C hic was invented only about 20 years ago and became a reflection of the worldview of interior designer Rachel Ashwell (Rachel Ashwell). You can read about the history of style.

Well, the techniques for achieving a visual effect in one style can easily coincide with the techniques of a completely contrasting style. For example, we, scrapbookers, can use the white acrylic splatter technique as in the style S habby C hic and Steampunk style.

Let's return to art and consider the following gradation of terms:

1) Art form

2) Genre or style in art

3) Techniques in which this or that adherent of style/genre works.

Consider this chain on a simple example.

Type of art - PAINTING, style Marinism and technique ... Here, for example, if the artist works in oil only intechnique ALLA PRIMA(writing an oil painting in one go), then we can call this artist like this:Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich, painter, adherent of the Marinism style, works in the ALLA PRIMA technique.

And if this brilliant Ivan Ivanovich suddenly decides to add some topping to the paint at the stage of work, and then apply craquelure varnish to heighten the effect, then the following will be written about such an artist:Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich, painter, adherent of the Marinism style, works in mixed media.

Now the difference between style and technique is obvious. And it immediately becomes clear that both a painter and a fan can work in mixed media. S habby C hic, the main thing is to observe the “mixing” of media (techniques).

Now let's get back to scrapbooking and also try to put everything on the shelves.

Since scrapbooking is one of the types of arts and crafts (DPI), the chain will be as follows:

art form– Scrapbooking

And in conclusion, one more interesting and important nuance about the origin of the concept of Mixed Media.

Having visited many online Mixed Media Art galleries, I have come to the conclusion that Mixed Media is a relatively new concept that has emerged in contemporary art. All modern freelance artists are bright individuals, EACH with their own style and worldview, these artists are not used to "frames" in creativity, they do not want to hear about boundaries, because creativity for them is freedom. But since in our world the style is what is accepted by a large number of people, and the styles of these most free artists do not yet meet such a requirement (too many personalities), this mysterious abbreviation was invented for them - Mixed Media. Now all freelance artists can say that they work in a mysterious and magical mixed media, which, by the way, each has its own (its own mixture of techniques). But in fact, naturalists, modernists, and scrapbookers are also engaged in a mixture of techniques / media;).

Create in mixed media and don't bother! Does it matter what it's called? After all, the main thing is pleasure that can give us creativity!

Mix media master class

Mixed media is a mixed technique, which means that when creating a work, we used not one, but several materials, methods of overlay. And it should be "full" or "equal" use, and not just for show. For some reason, it is believed that mix media begins from the moment when 3 techniques are mixed. Now I will try to tell you how I made a mixed media bottle. It is not difficult, interesting, and the result pleases and surprises.

What we need to work:

  1. A bottle of wine
  2. masking tape
  3. PVA glue
  4. Various buttons, beads, remnants of jewelry, gears
  5. Glue Moment installation
  6. Black, red-brown, gold acrylic paints
  7. wooden plaque
  8. Twine

Let's get started:

We clean the bottle from the label, it’s possible not very carefully, since anyway we will have all this covered with a large layer of different materials, but it’s better to remove the paper layer anyway. It is not necessary to degrease the bottle, but if you are a pedantic person who is used to following the rules, then degrease it with alcohol. It will not affect the quality of work. But for well-being - for sure.
We take masking tape and wrap the bottle around, you don’t have to worry that folds and jams are obtained:

Here we wrapped the bottle completely, without going to the label covering the neck:

We carefully walk through the bottle with our palms, tightly pressing and gluing what has not yet been pressed or stuck.
We take out beads, buttons from the bins and figure it out. what we can use:

Let's admire the riches a little (as without it). solving along the way. which will be of use to us in this work.
I decided to decorate my bottle with a lace ribbon along the bottom edge, as the lace creates a nice embossed surface:

Glue the tape with PVA glue:

We are waiting for it to dry.
Now it's time for the glue. Moment:
We string beads on a string, glue an impromptu necklace on the neck of the bottle, then buttons and pebbles.

I also had a cameo, we also attach it with glue for a moment.

Now we need wood putty, I have this one:

We need putty for that. to create an embossed surface on the bottle. In order to achieve this effect, we will put putty on those places of the bottle where there are no decorative elements yet. We apply the putty unevenly, creating a relief and at the same time we will press additional decor into the still damp putty, I have these chip boards in the form of gears, metal keys, screws

We cover the entire bottle in this way, let it dry. Then we cover everything with black acrylic paint.

Dry again. We get a very embossed black surface, on which it is completely invisible what exactly creates this relief. At this point, you can cover the bottle with acrylic varnish. anyone. Acrylic - because it dries quickly. and we always want to see the result of our work as soon as possible. So choose acrylic. Plus, it doesn't smell.
Now we need to select volumetric elements, for this we will go through the sponge first with brown paint, then with gold. do not cover everything tightly. but we touch somewhere. where you like. Now it will be useful for us that we varnished the bottle before, since now we have the opportunity to erase brown and gold paint from those places where their use seemed inappropriate to us.
Not everyone can immediately predict exactly where to apply color spots, personally I definitely can’t do it. Paints are best applied in turn. brown first, let dry. Then gold. This is what happens as a result of the relief selection:

Approximately such a bottle we get.
I also decided to decorate the bottle with a scroll, which will say what kind of wine it is.
To do this, print the text on office paper, burn the edges:

Then we tint a little, for this we brew instant coffee, and dipping a cotton wool into it, we moisten our scroll, you can still sprinkle dry coffee in some places to enhance the effect:

Dry, twist into a tube.

And in order to fix it on the bottle, we glue the handle for the box on the bottle:

Glue the handle with glue moment. Then we pass a scroll into the handle:

To indicate that the bottle is not just an artifact from the bottom of the sea. but still, a bottle of wine, let's make a wooden plate, glue a label printed from the Internet on it and attach the plate with twine. in this way we will kill two birds with one stone, attach the label and mask the transition from the bottle to its neck:

In principle, if you don’t want to make a sign, you can simply wrap the neck with twine. it will work out well too.

I think it's a good souvenir! And we spent a lot of time and money on it. Sometimes it matters!
I wish you inspiration! And that there were many reasons for that. to use this inspiration not in vain!

It happens that the blanks for the album were not at hand. What to do? Run to the store or do it yourself? I want to show you how quickly and easily you can create a mini-album from scratch, with only binding cardboard and a desire to create!

I really like working with paints and sprays, so I decided that it would be in the style of mixed media. For my album, I took a set of tilde paper from the old collection (I love it very much) and did not use the blank, because I wanted to show how it can be made by hand.

Here we go!

List of materials:

  • binding board or beer board, preferably 2-3 mm (I buy it in large sheets from art stores)
  • scrapbooking paper 3 sheets size 30x30 cm
  • scissors
  • printed album template
  • coarse sandpaper
  • white acrylic paint
  • texture paste
  • masks and stencils
  • spray paint
  • palette knife
  • stamps
  • ink
  • tassel
  • eyelet installer or crop-a-dile
  • scrapbook rings or waxed cord
  • eyelets
  • decorations

Print and cut out the template for the album

We apply a template to the binding cardboard and circle it

Then we cut out each page according to the template.

Let's go through our workpieces with coarse-grained sandpaper

We number our pages so as not to get confused when gluing paper

Let's start gluing the paper. It is very easy to get confused here, so we look strictly at the numbers.

We take the first sheet of paper and glue 4 pages to it. We “stroke” the entire sheet with a stick (I have an IKEA knife from a modeling kit), pressing lightly. This way the paper will stick better to the cardboard.

Carefully cut out and take 2 sheets of scrap paper and glue the following pages to it.

Do the same with the last sheet of scrap paper.

Now we sand all the blanks with coarse sandpaper

Let's start painting the sides of the album. To do this, take white acrylic paint and a medium brush and carefully paint. If your paper is bright, like mine, it is better to slightly muffle it with white acrylic paint - by painting all the pages, including the sides of the album, with acrylic paint.

We dry our entire album, it is better not to use a hair dryer, as the glue can dry out and fall behind the pages. Next, we take texture paste, a palette knife and masks and create a voluminous background.

Let's start creating a background with sprays. I used shimmery spray paints in my album.

We remove everything that you are afraid to get dirty, put an A3 sheet folded in half on the mat and proceed to create the background.

Pshykaem first one color

Add a second color and color all the pages in this way. On one page I recommend using no more than 2-3 colors.

With the help of stamps and ink, we continue to create a background

With the help of a cropodile, we make holes and insert eyelets

I only found gold eyelets of the right size, so I degreased them and painted them with white acrylic paint.

Now it's time to decorate. In the album, it is better not to use voluminous decorations, as the album may swell.

That's all!

Have fun and see you soon!

Now you will not surprise anyone with the "mix-media" style in scrapbooking. Not everyone loves him and knows how to work with him, but at least everyone has an idea of what it is. But "mix media" continues to amaze us! In this article, you can learn about the different types of this style in scrapbooking. But first, a link to an online store where everything for scrapbooking is cheap.

Mixed media album

Vika sorted out all the nuances and complexities of working with sprays, alcohol ink, paste, primer and stencils. After her MK, the style of mixed media ceased to be frightening and incomprehensible to me.

Mix media style with acrylic paints

The technique of working with acrylic paints to create pages and covers is as difficult as it is easy!
At first glance, the work in this technique seems incredibly complex. But if you take the time to figure it out, you understand that "everything ingenious is simple"! The technique is simple but laborious.

For me, the teacher of the "mixed media" style with acrylic paints was I do not know any other master who would create page backgrounds and covers with acrylic paints so magically as Vika! When I looked not at her work, I was tormented by only one question: "HOW?"

Thanks to Wiki's lesson on ScrapPortal (School of Scrapbooking. Stage 3. Album "Book of Life" by Victoria Sokolovskaya) and the SP on her blog, you can learn the whole sequence of creating mixed media works using acrylic paints, primer, paste and stencils.

Which type of mixed media is best? No one can answer this question for you except yourself. By experimenting with different colors, you can decide which technique you like.
The main difference between all kinds of "mixed media" style is that it allows you to create not just scrap work, but an art object! Each page created with paints is a mini-picture made by your own hands. There are no rules and restrictions, only the fantasy of the master, expressed with the help of paints!
In order to fall in love with the style of "mixed media", you just need to try all possible types.

So let's start the magic, shall we?

Materials:

1. The base that we will decorate(it is not necessary to take the same notebook - it can be a cover, a box, a frame for a photo ... By the way, for those who are for the first time, I strongly advise you to start with small forms, for example, with a tag, automatic telephone exchange or, say, an A6 notepad - here your imagination is not limited by anything, although if you feel the strength in yourself - of course, take what your soul lies in!) And here's what I worked with:

2.Acrylic primer(I used different ones, but I didn’t notice much difference, so we take what we have!) We immediately prepare a spatula or palette knife for the soil (it can be replaced with an ordinary old plastic card), a brush and gauze / bandage, as well as an ordinary kitchen sponge.

3. texture paste(there are also a great many of them! Since all our paste will be “smeared” with paints, it makes no sense to take it with any effect in this case. We will start from the simplest, basic level).

4. Stencils and/or masks(the difference between them is that with a stencil, the area of the picture itself is painted over, and with a mask, the area around the picture, i.e. its contour is created). I used 3 types.

5. Acrylic paints. If someone only plans to buy paints, I can advise you to take small sets, where there are all the main colors, for example, Decola. Then, over time, when you yourself understand your color tastes and preferences, you can already buy separate jars with specific colors. They are enough for a much longer period, and the paint in them does not dry out due to the tight-fitting lid. For example, for this work, I originally prepared the following set:

Little to do with the result, right?))) If you want to repeat the gothic palette, like mine, you only need two colors - black and white. And so, again, everything is up to your taste!
6. Stamps, better background, of course, unobtrusive, and either with a very small or with a rather large pattern - we will stamp on the textured surface, so that half will simply not be printed (therefore, we will leave beautiful curls and butterflies until better times!)
7. I used more embossing, but this item is absolutely optional, so you can safely omit it.
8. Well, actually decor- here I’m not your adviser, but only your inspiration and vision of what is happening!)
That's like everything. We'll discuss the rest as we go. Here we go?)

Step 1.

We prime the entire surface.

Decoupagers know that it must first be degreased, but I am not a decoupager, and therefore I skip this point with a clear conscience) I prime with a palette knife, you can use a plastic card. In the photo, I showed the difference between applying the primer with a brush (below) and a palette knife (above).

A brush is more convenient to go through the folds and other hard-to-reach places.

*It’s better to work on oilcloth (I use a postal plastic envelope for this function), paper and newspaper can stick to the ground and the “tearing off” process threatens to violate the integrity of our coating*

Step 2

Let the soil dry out a bit. , but not completely. Cut off a piece of gauze and mohrim the edges so that there are no lumps and nothing falls off and sticks together (as soon as you start straightening the gauze, you will understand what I mean =) It's just different, when we start to "stick" it, the edges will bulge and bulge ugly .
Then we apply gauze to our work wherever we like, and "priming" . It is more convenient to do this with a brush. I usually go over the entire perimeter of the gauze with wide strokes from above, and then, when it is fixed in place, I carefully prime the edges so that the transition of the gauze to the base is not noticeable.

Step 3

Now that the gauze is well smeared, we send the work to dry. You can just wait until everything dries by itself, happy owners of an embossing hair dryer can dry it with it, and I was so lazy to mess with a hair dryer that I found another solution - I put the cover in front of a fan-heater)))

Step 4

The next step is to work with texture paste. . We take stencils or masks and randomly apply the drawing we like to various parts of the work - they don’t have to be different, like mine, it’s quite possible to get by with one stencil.
I’ll make a reservation right away about this - if you have a large stencil, say, 30x30, you don’t need to cover up all the work with it alone! In the vast majority of cases, it does not look nice and cumbersome. It is much better if you apply small, in some places even torn pieces of the picture even from one stencil in different places - this way the work will immediately have some charm, thoughtfulness and style. Try it!)
We firmly press the stencil / mask to work (in this regard, self-adhesive stencils are very convenient!) And apply a thick layer of texture paste with a palette knife or a plastic card. It is advisable to do everything in one direction, removing the extra layer of paste and smoothing it over the surface (again, to understand what I mean, you just need to try!)
And one more such moment - where we have a gauze, you need to choose a larger stencil / mask pattern, otherwise it will partially “fall through” into the pores and it will simply be hard to see.
This is the background I got.

Always try to leave "blank space", ie. without texture paste (don't look at me - I'm not an important example)))) We will need it in the future!

Step 5

Next, take paints, a brush and a kitchen sponge (we cut it into several convenient squares). In fact, the whole secret in a beautiful application of a layer of paint lies precisely in this sponge) Where we do not have gauze, you can immediately begin to paint over the background with a sponge - first with smearing movements, and already pressing / smacking from above) Where the gauze lies, first you need to carefully paint over the entire space with a brush, and then go through the second layer with a sponge. We do not regret the paint! =) If you need to apply another layer - wait until the previous one dries, otherwise everything will simply be smeared.

Step 6

So, we painted over all our work with the colors / color we wanted . If you have chosen several colors as your color scheme, then it is better if they are of a similar shade so that smooth transitions can be made. It is not at all difficult to make such a transition: first, with a sponge on the border of colors, carefully climb one color onto another - like mine, for example, first we “bang” black on white, and then vice versa - white on black. By the way, for each color I use a separate piece of sponge, for convenience)

Step 7

Now let's work in perfect harmony! To do this, we apply a little white paint on the sponge and, barely pressing, carefully paint over the convex pattern from the texture paint in the black areas, it turns out very beautifully - as if we powdered it with snow or hoarfrost) If you have other colors, then also choose the lightest of them and we go through the rest with a sponge, or else - if the color scheme allows, we take the same white acrylic and tint all the work with it.
Be sure to tint the edges with paint - this gives some completeness and completeness to the appearance of the work.

Step 8

The next step is stamping. . I chose only two types of stamps - rhombuses and background text. stamping paint! Now it becomes clear why we needed a place "empty" from the texture paste! Only here all your stamps will be printed completely. Wherever there is texture paste and even more so gauze - half of the pattern will be "eaten". But in our case, this is not scary, because. in mixed media this is even welcomed =) We stamp randomly, without (!) an acrylic block (this way a much larger percentage of the picture will be printed). I stamped white on black and vice versa, black on white)

Step 9

The next step is optional - embossing) If you have a place that is free of gauze and texture paste, you can safely emboss some bright, contrasting pattern on it. If, like me, there is no such place, then you can use an embossing pad to go over the convex pattern from the texture paste, cover it with powder and bake it with a hair dryer. I got a kind of effect of "hoarfrost shining in the sun", unfortunately, almost invisible in the photo =(

Step 10

Actually, that's all! We have a chic background ready! ) It remains only to choose the decor and you can be proud of yourself!) As for the decor, I have only one small addition. Still, mixed media loves volume, texture and texture, and therefore, even with a flat decor, you can give the effect of volume using, say, scrap paper or fabric! I really like this technique, and I also applied it here =)

I always advise all decorations to either be sewn on a typewriter / manually, or attached to the brads. So, our final touch and ... voila!)

I got a cover with contrasts. And what will happen to you? I hope my MK will come in handy for you to create your small (and maybe big!) masterpieces, give you self-confidence and give a little inspiration!)
I'm also looking forward to your participation in the ScrapMaster "Style Month: Mixed Madia" marathon! You can still have time to please us and yourself with your wonderful works in this style!

And also, among those who, participating in our marathon, will do their work on this MK (with a link to it), I will choose one that I liked the most, and regardless of whether it got into our general TOP or not, I will do nice little gift for your future mix media endeavors) I promise you will love it ;)))

Thank you for attention!
