In the 2019/20 academic year, the III All-Russian competition of arts and crafts for children “Traditions and Modernity” will be held. The main mission of the competition is to promote the national spiritual priorities of our country, embodied in the expressive means of decorative and applied art.

The strategy of the competition is based on the visual precision and purity of decorative and applied trends, formed by many centuries of their development and improvement, fully reflected in children's artistic creativity. This circumstance is very relevant today due to the dominance of souvenir and ornamental products, which are categorically unrelated to values and works of arts and crafts. As a rule, art school students understand this contradiction very well, but it is important to educate the viewer through examples of contemporary arts and crafts by young artists.

The organizers of the competition are Autonomous non-profit organization“Center for Fine Arts “Art-Laboratory” and Children's Art School No. 2 of Applied and Decorative Arts named after V.D. Polenova (Tambov). The school is a unique institution of additional education for children; the largest number of arts and crafts programs are implemented here, and a highly qualified team of artist-teachers works. The school is the winner of the All-Russian competition “50 Best Art Schools” and a laureate of the Central Federal District Prize in the field of literature and art.

Competition events take place throughout the academic year. Until January 15 Stage 1 work will be accepted in electronic form, and until March 15 products that have passed the selection will be accepted by the organizing committee to participate in the final exhibition and determine the winners. The jury will work in early April, and the exhibition will be on display until the end of May. In addition, during the first half of the year, 7 master classes on various types of decorative and applied arts will be held.

The co-organizer of the competition is Federal State Budgetary Institution "All-Russian Center for Artistic Creativity and Humanitarian Technologies". The center provides information and consulting support. Head of the Department for the Development of Humanitarian Technologies and Preservation of Cultural Heritage at the All-Russian Central Art Theater I.V. Lovtsova – permanent member of the competition jury.

Holding such a competition makes it possible to identify the features of the current state of arts and crafts creativity of children in Russia, and its site is actually an exposition where the best achievements of students in this direction are collected. The competition shows the high level of the submitted works, which is especially significant for the preservation and development of the traditions of decorative and applied arts, which contain the deep aesthetic values of the peoples of Russia. Each presented type of this art has its own unique artistic characteristics and technology, and this makes the exhibition of the competition very rich and varied, but nevertheless, all presented products, from the point of view of professional art, fully comply with the technological requirements of each specific type of DPI.
